Great entry-level mirconeedler
I've had the opportunity to try out a few different microneedling devices for comparison. This is the second Dr. Pen device I've tried, and it's a fraction of the price of their M8 device.
This device doesn't feel or look as sleek as their M8, but it works in the same way. It's still comfortable for my small-ish hands. It's plastic casing is smooth and well made. It comes in a nice little storage box with packaged needles and a charger. It has a pin connector charger that plugs into an AC/DC adaptor via USB. Having around a bunch of different cords and adaptors for various devices is a bit of a PITA, and one of my pet peeves, but it's easy enough to keep everything together in it's case.
The pen charges up via it's charger, and you'll get a green indicator when it's ready to use. The cartridges slot in via a bayonet style connector. Dr. Pen makes refill needles, but it'll also take generic ones if you shop around and make sure they're the same connector and shape. Some of the Dr. Pen units have very specific needle cartridge shapes, but this one looks to be pretty standard shaped. The needle depth adjustment is around the tip and it moves smoothly but not so smoothly that you'd have to worry about it moving accidently during use. The speed settings are all changed via the power button. A long press powers it on and you'll get a green light for the lowest speed. Subsequent presses up the speed and change the color of the LED. It comes with 5 -12 pin cartridges. These are the most common size. You can get more pins, but those are generally not for your face except for the micro cartridges which are used primarily to help your products absorb better.
Does it hurt? Yep. Some folks may have a higher pain tolerance, and I can tolerate it, but it does hurt so I use a numbing cream on my face first and then I'm fine. If you're just starting out, this unit should be good for your needs. It does exactly the same thing as higher priced units. The more expensive versions do feel more robust, look sleeker, and are a bit more comfortable to hold in my opinion, so you can always upgrade later if you want.
